The Role of the Bank of England in Managing Post-Brexit Economic Volatility – Kavan Choksi

The Role of the Bank of England in Managing Post-Brexit Economic Volatility – Kavan Choksi

Posted on August 8, 2025 by Laura

The United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union marked a significant shift in its economic landscape. Brexit not only redefined trade relationships but also introduced a new level of uncertainty for businesses, investors, and consumers. Kavan Choksi says that in this environment, the Bank of England has played a central role in trying to manage the economic instability that followed. Through monetary policy, regulatory oversight, and market intervention, the Bank has worked to stabilize the economy and maintain public confidence during a turbulent period.

One of the Bank’s main responsibilities has been to respond to the financial uncertainty triggered by Brexit-related events. In the lead-up to the 2016 referendum and immediately afterward, markets experienced sharp volatility. The pound fell to historic lows, and investor confidence wavered. The Bank of England acted quickly by cutting interest rates and expanding its asset purchase program to inject liquidity into the economy. These early moves were aimed at calming financial markets and encouraging borrowing and investment.

In the years since, the Bank has had to walk a careful line between supporting the economy and containing inflation. Brexit introduced new frictions to trade and labor markets, which contributed to rising costs for businesses and consumers. At the same time, global economic challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine complicated the recovery process. The Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee has had to balance these competing pressures while keeping inflation close to its 2 percent target.

Currency stability has been another key concern. The pound’s value affects everything from import prices to investor sentiment. Since Brexit, the Bank has kept a close eye on exchange rates, intervening only indirectly through its interest rate policy and economic forecasts. While it does not target a specific exchange rate, maintaining overall financial stability helps reduce the risk of large currency swings that could damage the economy.

The Bank has also played a behind-the-scenes role in helping financial institutions prepare for the new post-Brexit regulatory environment. With London no longer automatically part of the EU’s financial services framework, the Bank has worked to ensure that UK-based firms remain well-capitalized and resilient. It has also collaborated with other regulators to maintain smooth functioning in payment systems, clearinghouses, and cross-border financial activity.

Perhaps one of the most important roles the Bank has played is in communication. In uncertain times, clear and consistent messaging is essential to managing expectations. The Bank of England has increased its efforts to explain its decisions to the public, markets, and policymakers. Regular press conferences, reports, and economic forecasts aim to provide transparency and reduce speculation.

To sum up, the Bank of England has acted as a steadying force in the aftermath of Brexit. While it cannot undo the structural changes that have come with the UK’s new relationship with Europe, it continues to use its tools to limit economic disruption, protect financial stability, and guide the country through an uncertain economic future.
